Mosquitoes, Cow Dung, and Magic: What Espiritu Santo Taught Me About Family
This session is one I'll never forget — and not just because of the photos. We were on Espiritu Santo, deep in a palm plantation during the wet season. Nearly 100% humidity. Hundreds of mosquitoes biting us alive. Cow dung everywhere. And right in the middle of all of it — a family that showed up with nothing but love and trust. Mom, dad, their daughter and son, joined by grandparents who traveled from another island to be there. This family's story is one that's close to my heart — they adopted a local Ni-Vanuatu girl, and watching them all together under those palms, you'd never know the conditions were anything less than perfect. They laughed. They held each other. They were just… family.
🌿 The Magic Was Never the Location
People see these images and assume we were at some resort or curated set. We were standing in a cow pasture under coconut palms, drenched in sweat and covered in bites. But look at that light. Look at those faces. That's what happens when people trust their family photographer enough to just be themselves. Seven years in Vanuatu taught me that. Over and over.
What the Islands Taught Me
In Vanuatu, you don't control the environment. You can't reschedule for humidity or move indoors when the bugs show up. You learn to work with whatever the moment gives you — and find the beauty inside of it. I carry that with me every day now as a Kansas City family photographer. Perfect conditions don't make perfect photos. Connection does. Trust does. Showing up and laughing through the mess — that's what makes an image feel alive.
